چکیده

Micromachining technologies have been used to manufacture neural microelectrodes for roughly a decade. One promising approach utilizes polyimide as a flexible and light-weighted substrate that carries electrode contacts, tracks, and connector pads. Beyond encouraging results, mainly gained in acute animal trials and in vitro tests, the reliability of this technology needs to be proved. The presented study investigates polyimide microelectrodes after several months of implantation focusing on the reliability of used materials and applied technologies.

Micromachined Multichannel Cuff ' Electrodes for Interfacing Small Nerves

Cuff electrodes are often used for interfacing nerves. Especially for small nerves, a new approach of flexible and light-weighted multichannel cuff electrodes with integrated cables has been developed using micro-chining technologies. Here, the process technology is shortly introduced. The results of in vitro test were discussed. In vivo implantations showed excellent properties of the electrod...

Functional regeneration of glossopharyngeal nerve through micromachined sieve electrode arrays.

To assess the potential of micromachined silicon sieve electrodes for long term recordings from single afferent sensory fibers, we implanted them between the cut ends of rat glossopharyngeal nerves which innervate taste and somatosensory receptors on the posterior tongue. After the implants had been in place for an average of 101 days nerve regeneration was measured using histological and elect...

A Parylene Peripheral Nerve Cuff Electrode with Integrated Microfluidics

We present a novel micromachined polymer peripheral nerve interface that combines both electrodes and microfluidic channels in an adjustable cuff sized to interface with rat sciatic nerve. Parylene fluidic channels enable targeted delivery of lysing agents and neurotrophic factors to fascicle sites on the nerve surface, in order to induce axonal sprouting towards electrodes. This Lyse-andAttrac...

Characterization and optimization of microelectrode arrays for in vivo nerve signal recording and stimulation.

Revealing the complex signal-processing mechanisms and interconnection patterns of the nervous system has long been an intriguing puzzle. As a contribution to its understanding the optimization of the impedance behavior of implantable electrode arrays with via holes is discussed here. Peripheral axons will regenerate through these holes allowing for simultaneous nerve stimulation and signal rec...

Micromachined Electrochemical cell platform for biosensors

Miniaturized Electrochemical cell platforms are developed using two different approaches, namely surface and bulk micromachining technologies. Gold is used as the working electrode layer in both cases. In bulk micromachined device, electrodes are formed in the cavity created on silicon using KOH etching process while the cavity is formed using SU -8 epoxy photoresist on top of the electrodes in...
